Santa Fe de Antioquia

Santa Fe de Antioquia is an excellent option if you enjoy places with heritage architecture. It is located 79 kilometers away from Medellin. This town located in western sub-region of Antioquia, was the capital of the department for over 200 years. There you will find a historic center that has several architectural constructions from the colonial period to the present, including religious buildings that reflect the importance of the traditions in this beautiful town.

The magic of this place is strongly depicted by the cobbled streets, whitewashed facades and tall doors as a testimony of the era in which settlers and slaves lived in this town, founded in 1541. The magnificence of its Spanish Renaissance architecture has been recognized by national and international specialists.

The Puente Colgante de Occidente (Suspension Bridge) is one of the most representative and visited places of the region and crosses the Cauca river, one of the most important rivers in the country. Its construction began in 1887 and it came into service in 1895. It is considered to be the masterpiece of Antioquia’s engineering of the 19th century, and Jose Maria Villa, its designer and builder was one of the most prominent individuals of that period.

Santa Fe de Antioquia is not just a weekend destination. Several festivals take place in the town during the year. The most outstanding festivals are Fiesta de los Ddiablitos (the Feast of the Devils), the Film Festival in December and the HolyWeek celebration in April.
