El Hueco
In the Guayaquil area of Medellín’s downtown, there’s what for decades people have called El Hueco, the busiest commercial zone in the city. These blocks of maze-like shopping arcades and colorful umbrellas with products displayed on the outside offer everything a person could ever need at low prices. There are supplies for all types of businesses, clothing, footwear, accessories, decoration and technology items, toys, household appliances, furniture, and much more.
Here are the tips from the Medellín Travel team:
- San Antonio is the closest metro station; you can also get off at the tramway station of the same name or take a bus that drops you off near Plaza de Cisneros.
- These streets and shopping arcades are busy and bustling, so be prepared for a lively market atmosphere. Expect to find many things going on simultaneously: voices offering products blaring from megaphones, wooden carts full of fruit making their way along the sidewalks, music playing, people hurrying along with bags full of products, and a wide range of aromas and striking situations.
- It’s more convenient to make your purchases with cash, as not all places accept card payments.
- As in any crowded place, be careful with your belongings and keep them in sight at all times.
- Only walk in places where you observe shopping activity.
- It’s a place to visit during the day, preferably between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
