Paisa Talent in Germany

We spoke to Luis David Jimenez Franco, representative of the paisa culture in Germany who has positioned Medellin’s name up high.
Luis David, motivated by improving people’s quality of life and giving hope to those who unfortunately have developed cancer in more aggressive or advanced forms, created a method to optimize the molecular radiation therapy for patients with cancer during his PhD at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
“The molecular radiation therapy is to administer drugs that have high affinity with cancer cells and that also have a radioactive component that sterilizes them. The problem with this type of therapy is that radioactive drugs not only adhere to cancer cells but also accumulate in the organs, thus producing side effects due to the radiation” explains Luis David.
His work ensures that during the molecular radiation treatment the greatest possible number of cancer cells are sterilized without exceeding the limits of radiation tolerated by critical organs.
This work was presented for the first time in 2017 at the annual conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), and it was also published in the Medical Physics journal. In October, 2018, an additional preview of this project will be presented at the annual conference of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).
Although Luis David is outside the country, he recommends visiting Medellin for the kindness and warmth of its people and the supply of cool places to enjoy with friends and relatives. “It is a very beautiful and welcoming city from which one can also go to many amazing places as Guatape, Santa Fe de Antioquia or Jardín, where the landscapes are beautiful and overwhelming”.
He also recommends the typical Paisa food. “It is very good: we have many typical dishes, desserts and fruits that foreigners love as granadilla. The truth is that I think it is a place that is well worth visiting, that nourishes the soul, delights the palate and where you will always find good things to do and beautiful people to know.”
Luis David currently works in Abx Cro Clinical Research Organization, International Organization of clinical studies that focuses on cancer treatment located in Dresden, Germany.
