La Candelaria Church
La Candelaria is one of the most historic and traditional landmarks in Medellín’s downtown. Founded in 1649, this church is widely regarded by historians as the site around which the city’s first parish was established, marking the birth of Medellín.
Despite undergoing several reconstructions and restorations, La Candelaria still preserves important religious artworks from the 18th century. One of the most admired pieces is the canvas of the Virgin of La Candelaria, which draws both curious tourists and devoted believers who come to offer their prayers and hopes. For years, the church’s atrium has also been the gathering place for the Mothers of La Candelaria, a group of relatives of people who disappeared during the country’s armed conflict.
La Candelaria is located near other iconic landmarks in Medellín, including the traditional Parque Berrío and the famous Torso de Mujer sculpture —better known as Botero’s “Fat Lady”—a renowned work by Colombian artist Fernando Botero.
