Parques del Río
Parques del Río Medellín
The Medellín River has been one of the main sources of development in the city. Not surprisingly, the first metro line was built following its flow, which crosses the entire metropolitan area and creates a harmonious relationship between the region and its tributary. This is just one example of a land-use planning model that has been consolidated over the past 60 years and that allows for the coordination of planning and integrated growth of the territory while respecting the river.
This is exactly how the Parques del Río Medellín project was born. It’s a 71,800-square-meter public park that integrates the city with its river to generate equity, competitiveness, and sustainability. The green areas cover 38,052 square meters of this extensive urban infrastructure. The project included the planting of 280 trees to offer citizens a natural environment, strengthen Medellín as an eco-city, and provide refuge to various species of flora and fauna.
- Look for the Medellín aquí todo florece sign right by the Smart Tourism Center. It’s a great spot to take fun photos with a beautiful living garden wall in the background.
- Head to the eastern side to find five stunning sculptures, including Montaña Medellín, a striking 14-meter-high sculpture made of colorful stones. This is the first piece by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone in South America, created as a tribute to the mountains surrounding the city and as recognition of the resilience shown by local communities as they enter a new, less violent chapter in Medellín’s history.
- For an unforgettable experience, we recommend going during the “golden hour” (about an hour before sunset). Relax on one of the wooden benches on the western side and take in the sunset. Here, you can capture shots of the Metropolitan Theater, the EPM Smart Building, the riverbank trees, and the sky as a backdrop..
Walk through the two sections of the park. They’re located on the western and eastern sides of the Medellín River, which are connected by two bridges located at the south and north ends. You can enjoy spaces full of nature as well as cultural and gastronomic offerings along the way.
As you walk along the western side of the park, you’ll find different spaces to share with your family and give your pets a break. There’s La Pradera (the Meadow), which is a green area with wooden benches; it’s ideal for picnics, celebrations, or meetings. On the same side you’ll find the River Hall, a large place where you can exercise or simply relax and enjoy the architecture.
On the eastern side of Parques del Río, you’ll find the service modules with pergola roofs, which provide shade. You can also enjoy the Plaza de Niebla (Mist Square), which has mist fountains that provide an ideal microclimate for outdoor activities. You can walk along a wide corridor and see the scenery and flow of the Medellín River from the seven platforms or balconies.
The park is located between two Medellín comunas. The eastern section is in the comuna 10 (La Candelaria) and is next to EPM, the Metropolitan Theater, and Plaza Mayor. The western section is located in the comuna 11 (Laureles), in the vicinity of Conquistadores neighborhood. You can get to the park using the metro system.
If you are coming from the south, north, or east of the city, you can get off at Alpujarra station and walk for 10 minutes through the La Alpujarra Administrative Center. You can also get there from Exposiciones station, walking west along Calle 33.
For those traveling from the west of Medellín, the nearest station is Cisneros. Another option is to take the Metroplús and get off at Plaza Mayor station. - As it’s an open space, wearing sunscreen is essential. Medellín’s weather tends to be unpredictable. Although sometimes the sky is cloudy, the sun can surprise you at any time. It’s also advisable to wear comfortable clothes and shoes to walk more freely and comfortably.
- Another important aspect is to stay hydrated; a bottle of water is a must during outdoor activities. Please make responsible use of all the places in the park and don’t leave garbage in any space.
- Make sure you carry a camera with enough storage space, as the park has many green areas and a great view of the Medellín River that are worth taking pictures of.
